Mountain Bay Scuba
A new Wisconsin-based nonprofit is making waves in marine science education and youth opportunity. The Mountain Bay Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization formed in 2024 by local supporters, is dedicated to providing scholarships and educational resources for high school and college students with an interest in marine ecology, scuba diving, and environmental stewardship.
Founded on the belief that hands-on experience is essential to understanding and protecting the world’s oceans, the Mountain Bay Foundation seeks to remove financial barriers that often prevent students from pursuing specialized training and research opportunities. The foundation’s mission focuses on supporting instruction, equipment, and experiential learning for young people who aspire to careers in marine biology, conservation, and related fields
“Our oceans face unprecedented challenges—from climate change and pollution to overfishing,” said representatives of the foundation. “Preparing the next generation with the skills, knowledge, and passion to address these issues is one of the most meaningful investments we can make.”
One of the foundation’s flagship initiatives was funding four scholarships that allowed high school students to travel to Bonaire and Roatan, Caribbean islands known worldwide for their pristine reefs and marine conservation efforts. These scholarships covered the cost for students to obtain their SCUBA certification while gaining firsthand exposure to coral reef ecosystems. The experience blended technical diving skills with environmental education, giving students a deeper understanding of marine life and conservation practices that could not be replicated in a classroom setting.
In addition to supporting high school students, the Mountain Bay Foundation is investing directly in higher education within Wisconsin. The foundation recently provided funding to Lawrence University in Appleton to purchase twelve dive computers for use in its marine biology research course. These dive computers will allow students to safely collect data during underwater research activities, enhancing the university’s ability to offer practical, field-based marine science education.
By supporting both high school and college-level programs, the foundation aims to create a pathway for students—from early exposure to advanced academic research—to remain engaged in marine science and conservation.
The Mountain Bay Foundation has set an ambitious fundraising goal of $100,000. Funds raised will be used exclusively to support scholarships, training, equipment, and educational travel opportunities for students. Donations of all sizes are welcomed, and community members are encouraged to consider both one-time and recurring contributions to help sustain the foundation’s programs.
Beyond financial support, the foundation also invites local residents to get involved by volunteering, spreading awareness, and supporting its mission through community engagement. Organizers emphasize that protecting marine ecosystems is not just a global responsibility, but one that begins with local action and education.
As the Mountain Bay Foundation begins its work, its founders hope the organization will serve as a model for how Wisconsin communities can play a role in addressing global environmental challenges—by empowering students, investing in education, and inspiring a lifelong commitment to ocean conservation.
