Members of Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 1710 recently had the unique opportunity to tour the air traffic control tower at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, gaining a behind-the-scenes look at how air traffic controllers safely manage aircraft operations each day.
Nineteen chapter members participated in the tower tour, where controllers explained the critical role they play in coordinating arrivals, departures, and ground movements. The visit provided a firsthand perspective of the communication, teamwork, and focus required to keep the airspace safe and efficient.
Despite less-than-ideal weather conditions during the tour, members were still able to watch an aircraft depart from the airport, offering a live demonstration of the tower’s daily operations.
The experience also served as a reminder of what makes Wittman Regional Airport one of the most unique aviation locations in the world. In just a few months, the airport will transform into the busiest airport on the planet during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, when more than 10,000 aircraft and hundreds of thousands of aviation enthusiasts gather for the week long celebration of aviation.
“For many of our members, it was incredible to see the operation from the controller’s perspective,” said President, Mathieu Labs of EAA Chapter 1710. “Understanding what happens in the tower gives you a whole new appreciation for the coordination required, especially during events like AirVenture.”
EAA Chapter 1710 remains committed to inspiring the next generation of aviators, supporting aviation education, and bringing the local aviation community together through events, programs, and volunteer efforts.
