NATASHA WINKLER
As the new year begins, it is easy to think of “veteran issues” as something that happens far away, in the halls of the VA in Milwaukee or the legislative offices in Madison. But for the 28,000 households reading this paper across the Fox Cities, the reality of veteran life is much closer to home. It is found in the neighbor’s driveway in Greenville or the quiet gatherings at our local coffee shops.
As we move into the first days of 2026, the landscape for Wisconsin’s veterans is shifting. While we face challenges at the state level, our local community has stepped up to become a model of resilience and “neighbor-helping-neighbor” spirit.
The Casaloma “Town Square”
Look no further than N. Casaloma Drive in Grand Chute. The Wisconsin Veterans Village has grown from a vision into a true “town square” for our heroes. This year alone, the village has provided more than just housing; it provides a sense of belonging for those transitioning back to civilian life. For a veteran driving in from Hortonville or the Town of Center, this isn’t just a facility; it’s a place where the shared language of service is spoken fluently.
Legislative Momentum in Madison
While the local community provides the heart, the state legislature is currently providing the framework. As of late 2025, there are 12 veteran-related bills moving through the Wisconsin State Capitol. Key among them is Senate Bill 411, which aims to expand the property tax credit for disabled veterans. This proposed change would offer much-needed financial breathing room to families right here in Outagamie County. Additionally, renewed support for the Veterans Outreach and Recovery Program (VORP) ensures that mental health resources remain available to all 72 counties.
Vets-Ready in the Fox Valley
Perhaps most encouraging is how our local economy is embracing the mission. In 2025, the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development recognized several local employers with the “Vets Ready” distinction. Businesses like MCC Inc. and U.S. Venture Inc. have been honored for their commitment to hiring and supporting veterans. When our local businesses prioritize veterans, they aren’t just “hiring a hero”—they are gaining a workforce with unparalleled leadership and problem-solving skills.
How You Can Help: A Call to Action
Gratitude is a verb. If you are looking for a way to support those who served, consider a contribution to these vital local programs:
- Donate to the Veterans Emergency Fund: The Fox Valley Veterans Council provides emergency financial assistance to local vets for housing, utilities, and car repairs when no other help is available. You can donate online at foxvalleyveterans.org/support or mail a check to 2 N. Systems Dr., Appleton, WI 54914.
- Support the Veterans Marketplace: The Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin (Casaloma Dr.) accepts donations of non-perishable food, hygiene products, and household goods to stock their marketplace. This service allows veterans and their families to shop for essentials at no cost.
- Connect a Veteran: If you know a veteran who is struggling to navigate their benefits, point them to the Outagamie County Veterans Service Office at 320 S. Walnut St. in Appleton (920-832-5697). Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give is a simple connection to the right resource.
In a world of shifting headlines, let the Fox Valley remain a place where we don’t just say “thank you for your service,” but we prove it through the community we build together.
