As the weather cools and fall traditions begin, the Town of Center Fire Department reminds residents to stay alert and practice fire safety. Whether you’re burning leaves, preparing a Thanksgiving turkey, or enjoying a cozy fire, taking a few precautions can prevent dangerous and costly fires.
Leaf Burning Safety
Before burning leaves, check your local regulations to ensure burning is allowed in your municipality. If it is, always choose a safe location far from buildings, trees, and power lines. Avoid burning on windy days and never leave a fire unattended. Keep a water source such as a garden hose or buckets of water nearby to control the flames if they spread. Burn small piles at a time and make sure the fire is completely out before leaving the area. Once finished, stir the ashes with water to ensure no embers remain.
Turkey Frying Safety
Deep-fried turkeys have become a popular Thanksgiving tradition, but they can also cause severe fires if not done properly. Never fry a turkey indoors, in a garage, or on a wooden deck. Always set up your fryer on a flat, nonflammable surface outdoors. Before cooking, make sure your turkey is completely thawed and dry because water and ice can cause the hot oil to boil over instantly. Overfilled oil can also spill when you lower the turkey, creating a dangerous flare-up.
Keep children and pets away from the fryer area and never leave the fryer unattended while it is in use. Have a fire blanket nearby in case of a grease fire. Most household fire extinguishers are not suitable for grease fires, and never use water to put one out because it will only spread the flames.
Wood-Burning Fireplace Safety
A warm fire can make your home feel cozy on chilly fall nights, but safety begins with proper maintenance. Have your chimney inspected by a professional each year before using your fireplace. Creosote buildup inside the chimney can easily ignite, causing a chimney or house fire. Burn only dry, seasoned wood since green or wet wood produces more smoke and buildup. Always use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks from escaping into the room. After your fire burns out, let the ashes cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container with a tight lid. Store the container outside, away from your home or garage.
From your friends and family at the Town of Center Fire Department, we wish you a safe and blessed holiday season. Stay warm, stay vigilant, and remember that fire safety starts at home.
