The Friends of the Scheig Center Gardens are sponsoring a free “open garden” event for anyone interested in beautiful gardens, plants, and just being outdoors. There will be activities for people of all ages. The gardens are located inside Appleton’s Veterans Memorial Park. The walk will take place rain or shine.
The gardens include a wide variety of flower displays from wild flowers to hybrid roses. Come for ideas or just to enjoy the flower displays. Most of the paths are mobility-friendly and easy to navigate.
Children are welcome at the Scheig
The Friends of the Scheig Center Gardens booth will provide a make-and-take art project for kids as well as bookmarks and painted stones. There is also a scavenger hunt for kids around the gardens with Appleton pool passes and Dairy Queen Coupons as some of the prizes. Pick up scavenger hunt forms in the Kid’s Area. Kids might also enjoy seeing an actual bird of prey as part of the Bird City activities. Also check out Dick’s Bees and Apple Blossoms for Appleton booths in the Kid’s area and face painting by Ali.
Blooms and Birds
We are celebrating the gardens on this Saturday and Appleton being names a Bird City. “To be recognized as a Bird City, a community must meet criteria spread across six categories: habitat creation and protection, community forest management, limiting threats to birds, education, energy and stability, and the recognition and celebration of World Migratory Bird Day.” Join us for a bird hike at 8:30AM; a bird banding demonstration from 7AM to 10AM; and talk to bird experts about attracting Purple Martins and bird houses in general.
Do You Have Plant Questions?
Representatives from area garden groups will be in attendance. Chat with the Bonsai Society, The Wild Ones (native plants), The Appleton City Forester, Apple Blossoms for Appleton, and Marigold Mile volunteers (free Marigolds).
Tour the gardens, perhaps win garden-themed art at the Scheig Friends free drawing booth; or you can purchase garden-themed art from Karen Boughton; botanical items from The Seed Guild; Tree Charms by Colleen; and glass art from Cheesehead Glass. Matthew’s Succulents will have an interesting variety of plants for sale, and Botanophilia will have shade plants available for purchase. While browsing the booths, enjoy live acoustic music by the Scheig Jammer Musicians.
