In two sessions held this month, the Grand Chute Town Board moved forward with significant capital improvements, including a multi-million dollar storage facility and roadway repairs. The Board also authorized the modernization of police firearms and vehicle equipment while celebrating the 30-year career of the retiring Chief Building Inspector.
Infrastructure and Public Works
The Board addressed several major town facilities and infrastructure projects:
- Public Works Storage Building: A $4,020,000 contract was awarded to 8-Pine Inc. for the construction of a new enclosed storage building. Director Jolema noted the bid came in well under the initial $6.8 million budget, allowing for potential design add-backs later.
- 2026 Roadway Projects: The Board awarded the “Group A” contract for work on Edgewood Drive and the Mason Ridge Subdivision to MCC Inc.. The project cost is approximately $200,000 below the anticipated budget.
- LED Streetlight Conversion: Approval was granted for the second phase of a project with WE Energies to convert 171 high-wattage streetlights to LED. The project is expected to save the town $52,000 annually in electricity costs.
Public Safety and Grants
Significant updates were made to police department resources and funding:
- Firearm Replacement: The Board approved $42,939.60 to replace 12-year-old 40-caliber handguns with 9mm Glock pistols equipped with red-dot optics. Chief Mass noted the change improves officer accuracy and reduces ammunition costs.
- Police Vehicle Equipment: A request for $45,356.88 was approved for lighting, sirens, and consoles for five new police vehicles.
- Drug Trafficking Grant: The town accepted a $20,965 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The funds will be used for forensic cellphone analyst training in Washington D.C. and specialized equipment to combat drug trafficking.
Administrative and Personnel Updates
- Building Inspection Transition: The Board approved a professional services agreement with e-Plan Exam for commercial building plan reviews. This move follows the retirement of Chief Building Inspector Carrie Knate, who served the town for over 30 years.
- Fire Department Recognition: Chief Denzine announced that the Fire Department received International Re-Accreditation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence. Grand Chute is one of only 11 departments in Wisconsin to hold this distinction.
- Employee Handbook: Following a feedback period where 17 employees provided suggestions, the Board approved several modifications to the town’s employee handbook.
