NATASHA WINKLER
As winter continues to embrace our community, many residents are eager to venture out onto the ice for the beloved tradition of fishing. This time of year we must spotlight a crucial topic: ice safety.
The fundamental rule, according to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Fishing Association (WIFA), is that no ice is ever 100% safe. This is a fact we must embrace, not with fear, but with informed preparedness. Our community excels when we look out for one another, and this is where every angler, family, and organization can inspire hope.
The WIFA presentation emphasizes actionable precautions that strengthen personal and team safety:
- Never venture out alone; always use the buddy system. This is the simplest and most vital precaution.
- Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. This ensures accountability and a quick response if needed.
- Carry essential life-savers: ice picks, a safety rope, and an ice spud or chisel to constantly check ice thickness as you go.
This commitment to preparedness is championed right here in our area. We want to celebrate local groups like the Appleton North Fishing Club, who set a gold standard for their peers. By focusing on detailed, proactive training and adopting comprehensive “Team Safety Plans,” they are transforming a potential risk into an opportunity for collective responsibility and pride. The club’s dedication to mastering these life-saving skills not only protects their members but also serves as an inspiring example for all local recreational groups.
We encourage every Grand Chute resident planning a trip to the ice to develop their own safety plan and follow the example set by groups like the Appleton North Fishing Club. By being informed, taking precautions, and embracing a solutions-focused approach, we ensure that our cherished winter activities remain safe and enjoyable for everyone in our community. Let us continue to connect through shared responsibility and return home safely to tell our stories.
