It doesn’t matter if you’re a jeans kind of guy
Or you love to dress up in a suit and a tie
If you love to garden, or hunt or fish
Or can’t wait to try cooking a new kind of dish
It doesn’t matter if you work or relax
If you get up early or stay late in the sack
It doesn’t matter if you’re skinny or fat
If you go bare headed or always wear a hat
It doesn’t matter if you have one child or ten
You’ll look back on your life and remember when
When you saw your own baby for the very first time
Their tiny little toes & soft skin so divine
When they took their first steps or first word is DA
And you say to your wife Humpf! He didn’t say MA
When the child grew & outgrew their shoe
And your wife now mentions, there’s going to be TWO!
Then before you know it they’re called a teen
And often the kids make you want to scream!
Then there’s doctor visits & soccer games
And music lessons & parts in plays
A little bit of silliness & a whole lot of drama
Which will cause them all to run to their Mamma
But being a Dad is a test God gave
A test to teach your heart what to save
Do you ponder the problems, the worries, the bills?
Or trust in HIM to cure all these ills
The responsibility to take it all in
To teach the morals & keep them from sin
To listen, set an example, & reap the JOY
Of being a Dad to each girl and boy
So someday that child will look you in the eye
And you won’t be able to NOT break down and cry
As your grown son or daughter, be they good or bad
Says “I LOVE YOU and THANK YOU for being my DAD!”
